Hickory, NC(June 23, 2009) -- Everyone was getting bored with watching Late Model Stock Car veteran, Andy Mercer qualify on the pole and lead every lap en route to winning nine straight except Mercer and his team, but Saturday night that all changed.
Mercer again qualified on the pole with a blazing fast 15.157 second lap around the historic 3/8 mile track and for the fans in the stands it looked like another night of domination by Mercer and his team, but a huge change was about to happen. As the pole awards were being presented to each division Mercer was offered a $500.00 bonus if he could start in the rear of the field and come back to win.
He then counter offered and said "make it $1,000.00 and I'll do it" ... The announcer then asked the crowd if they wanted to see Mercer take the challenge and the fans went crazy. The race sponsor decided to add the $500.00 already put up by the Speedway's Womens Charity and make it a $1,000.00 bonus ... Mercer kept his word and started at the rear of the field.
It was a brave move for the driver, who had won the previous nine races especially considering the level of competition that had converged on Hickory Motor Speedway for a 100-lap race. Winners from other tracks and series had made their way to "America's Most Famous Short Track" and Mercer was going to have his work cut out for him to pass the 15-cars ahead of him at the drop of the green flag.
Mercer began to work his magic at the drop of the green flag slowly and methodically picking up position after position until he was inside the top ten. Anyone who follows Late Model Stock Car
racing knows how competitive it is and as the laps wore on, Mercer caught up to stiffer competition and had to make his moves when he had the chance.
Mercer worked his way inside the top five and then set his sights on getting to the front of the field, but several cautions and double file restarts would slow his progress through the field, but only for a short time. As the race neared the halfway mark, Mercer put his Reliable Fire & Safety, Steele Rubber Company, Pistone LTO Chassis into second place and set his sights on the leader.
On lap 53, Mercer put his car back out front as he had come full circle from winning the pole to starting in the rear of the field and now had his car in the lead. Mercer's work still wasn't completed as he had to hold on to the lead through a series of cautions in the final 40-laps of the race.
Mercer found out just how lucky he was when the cars from third through eleventh piled up in a nasty wreck that took out several of his toughest competitors. The early leader was then running second and on a later restart found himself missing a shift and heading to the back of the pack, leaving Mercer out front and without a challenge.
"Coming from the back of the field is tough anytime in these cars," said Mercer. "The level of competition in this race was incredible with the number of winners from other tracks. After starting in the rear I knew I had to be careful, but quickly move my way through the field and that's what I did."
Mercer had just gotten through the field when it seemed everything started to break loose behind the leaders and for he and his Mercer Racing team, the win after starting in the rear was huge.
"I thought we had a good enough car to get through the field by halfway and we did," continued Mercer. "I've told everyone our car is getting better every week and it was great again tonight. This win was special, the team gave me a great car and I drove my heart out and to win was awesome."
Mercer is supported by Reliable Fire & Safety, Steele Rubber Products, Performancenter Racing Warehouse, WP Racing Shocks, and Mercer Race Car Engineering. Mercer Racing takes two weeks off while touring series invade the track, but on Saturday, July 11th he'll be back in action in one of the biggest races of the season. The "Dwight Huffman Memorial" will be on tap and will have the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars going for 177-laps.
For Mercer and his team this win meant that they had captured ten wins in a row a nearly unprecedented mark that few drivers at any level of racing have ever been able to obtain and Mercer hopes he'll be extending that win streak when the track races again on July 11th.
