Hickory, NC(July 21, 2009) -- When it comes to winning in the Late Model Stock Car division at Hickory Motor Speedway in 2009 there's no way you could bet against Andy Mercer and this week after one race of being out of victory lane, the veteran was right back where he belonged.

Mercer and his Mercer Racing team missed out on a victory a week ago in the Dwight Huffman Memorial, the biggest race in recent memory on the 3/8 mile bullring in Hickory, NC. However, a problem found in practice this week may have been one of the reason why he wasn't around at the end of the race to battle for the win.

"One of the ratchet springs in the rear end had collapsed and we didn't find it until Saturday during practice," said Mercer. "The car wasn't handling right at the (Dwight)Huffman race, but we didn't consider the ratchet springs because

we had just changed them the week before as we try to change them every three races or so."

Mercer believes that is one of the reasons why he struggled with the handling of his car in the Dwight Huffman Memorial and one reason why you saw him running the high line instead of right around the bottom, where he usually runs.

"I feel like if we hadn't have had to run high due to the spring collapsing we wouldn't have got into some trash on the track and wouldn't have cut a tire. I just wish we could have found this last week and we would have been around at the end of the race last week and gave those guys a run for their money," continued Mercer.

After crew cheif, David Mercer found the problem with the rear end, the team sat out the second practice session to try and solve the problems. Then despite the issues and missing practice, Mercer went out and put his Pistone LTO Chassis powered by a General Motors Crate Engine on the pole for the 11th time this season.

When the green flag dropped for the 50-lap race, the "New King" as he been dubbed, put his car out front and with little challenge led from flag to flag to win his 11th race of the season, but he knew this had been a team effort.

"The car was good again, we were off last week, but this week David(Mercer) had this car rolling through the corners like it has all season. Good teams can rebound from problems and after fixing the problems with our rear end it was like we had never even had any issues. My brother(David Mercer) is a great crew chief and I'm lucky to have him, he won this race for us tonight."

Mercer was excited to be back in victory lane and after 11 wins this season, he and his team were in for a long night in the tech shed as the NASCAR Officials had decided to take apart Mercer's crate engine piece by piece. After the inspection was completed Mercer was declared the official winner and he and his team could celebrate their 11th triumph of the season.

Mercer has another week off before Hickory Motor Speedway will be back in action with the 14th race of the season on Saturday, August 1st. Mercer is supported by Reliable Fire & Safety, Steele Rubber Products, Performancenter Racing Warehouse, WP Racing Shocks, and Mercer Race Car Engineering.
