Mercer Wins in Green, White, Checkered for Win #13
Hickory, NC(August 18, 2009) -- "It's a seven point swing in the State points, that's all I could think about," said Mercer following his green, white, checkered heroics at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 15th when a late caution gave him the chance to vault from second to first in the final laps.
The seven point swing Mercer was referring to was the difference between a second place finish and the win, which in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina State Points Standings is two points for the position and five bonus points for the victory. Mercer concedes that he didn't have the dominant car like he's had for many of his wins this season, but with points on the line and the double-file restarts putting him in the high-line for the restart it was the perfect scenario.
"I can't tell you how many times I've been beat like that with someone on the high-side in the final laps, that caution got us where we needed to be and from there it was on," explained Mercer. "I don't think there's anyway we could have caught the leader, he just didn't make any mistakes and we were running about
even lap times, but it feels good to get another win."
For Mercer this was his 13th win on the season and while he had a streak of ten straight wins early in the season, where he was just a superior car, lately he's been having to work for the wins. Mercer said that he felt like he was just as good as the leader late in that race, but that he had got out to a lead earlier that he just couldn't overcome without the late race caution.
Mercer's hoping that the seven point swing in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series North Carolina state points standings with the win will be enough to vault him up in the thick of the battle for the state championship. Last week Mercer was third in the state standings just 19 points out of the lead with the veteran driver having run two less than the 18-races that can be counted towards the points total completed and no doubt this win will have elevated himself further.
Hickory Motor Speedway is off for the next two weeks, but then will return to action on Saturday, September 5th and 12th for the final two weeks that the points will count toward the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.
